Dr. Patrick Birungi

Patrick B. Birungi is the Executive Director of the Uganda Development Corporation (UDC), holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Pretoria, a Masters of Arts in Economics and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Makerere University. He joined the Corporation in 2019 and has positioned UDC as a valued partner for driving industrial growth and socio-economic transformation and a key player in the country’s development policy.
He has been essential in expanding the corporation’s investment portfolio and asset base. Patrick leads the development of the corporation’s strategy, ensuring continuous alignment with its mandate, and oversees the implementation of the same. He is at the forefront of building strategic investments for the corporation, which has realized great value over time.
His professional experience in economics gave him an appreciation for the development of economic models and forecasts to help governments, businesses, and individuals make better investment decisions, policy formulation, financial market development, macro-economic trends, internal controls, and governance strategies, raising him to the position of Director of Development Planning at the National Planning Authority, where he led the production of the National Vision 2040 and the Second National Development Plan. He was also a senior national economist at UNDP, which enabled him to gain vast experience in the implementation and supervision of GOU-UN programs and projects. Patrick spent most of his early working career in academia as a senior lecturer in economics at Makerere University.
